Candle care accessories worth having
You do not need much to look after a candle. These few accessories make it easier to burn it cleanly and safely.
Wick trimmer
A trimmer reaches into a jar and cuts the wick without the blades slipping into the wax. Look for a long handle and a small catch tray on the blade so the trimmed bit does not fall into the candle. Trim to about 5 mm before each light, once the candle has cooled.
Snuffer
A snuffer puts the flame out without blowing, so there is less smoke and no splashed wax. A bell shape on a long handle keeps your hand away from the heat. Hold it over the flame for a moment, then lift.
Long lighter or long matches
Deep jars are awkward with a short lighter. A long-neck lighter or long matches let you light the wick without leaning over the candle.
Heat-safe tray or coaster
Our concrete jars and trays get warm while the candle burns. Stand the candle on a flat ceramic, metal or stone tray so the surface underneath is protected and drips are caught.
Quick buying checklist
- Trimmer blade closes fully and reaches the bottom of your deepest jar
- Snuffer handle long enough to keep fingers clear of the flame
- Tray wider than the base of the candle, flat and heat resistant
- Lighter is refillable and has a child lock if children are at home
