Candle care 101: first burn, wick trimming and safe burning

A little care helps a candle burn evenly and look better for longer. These tips apply to most jar candles.
Make the first burn count
Let the first burn continue until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar, usually 2 to 3 hours. This helps prevent tunnelling, where the flame digs a hole down the middle.
Trim the wick
Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each light. A shorter wick gives a calmer flame and less soot on the jar.
Keep it safe
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it away from curtains, paper and drafts, and out of reach of children and pets. Place it on a flat, heat-safe surface.
Do not burn it for too long at once
Extinguish the candle after a few hours and let it cool before relighting. Stop using it when only a small amount of wax is left at the bottom.
Flower candles are for gentle burning
Candles with a piped flower on top are best lit for short periods, so the shape stays beautiful for longer.
