Diwali extras: lights, gift bags and decor basics
Handmade candles and rangoli go well with a few simple extras. Here is what to think about for lights, bags and holders.
String lights
Check whether lights are meant for indoor or outdoor use, and measure the distance to the socket. Do not overload one socket with many adaptors, and switch lights off when you go out or to sleep.
Gift bags
Reusable cloth bags or sturdy paper bags with handles carry heavy jars better than thin plastic.
Stable candle holders
Use flat, heat-safe holders that will not tip. Keep flames away from curtains, rangoli made of paper or cloth, torans and anything hanging. Never leave a flame unattended, especially with children and pets around.
Torans and hangings
Fabric or paper torans are light and easy to store for next year. Hang them well above any diya or candle.
Quick buying checklist
- Lights marked for the place you will use them
- No more than one plug per socket
- Every candle on a stable, heat-safe base
- Flames at least 30 cm away from anything that can catch fire
- Someone in the room whenever a flame is lit
